Summer Cruise 2022- Part 1

July 16-26

Prior to embarking on our full time cruising adventure, we took this summer to do an extended “shake-down cruise” to test Tasi and ourselves. We left San Diego on July 16th.

Leaving Shelter Island

After a brief stop in Isthmus Harbor on Santa Catalina Island we took off north to the Channel Islands, arriving in Prisoner’s Harbor on Santa Cruz Island on July 18th.

Channel Islands National Park

The Channel Islands National Park is one of the most isolated of all the National Parks. It encompasses the five remarkable islands of Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara and their ocean environments. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants and archeological resources. These islands can only be reached by ferries from the mainland or personal boats. Over the course of the summer we would visit many of them.

Over the next several days we explored the northern side of Santa Cruz Island exploring Hazard’s anchorage, Fry’s anchorage, and the painted caves. We ventured over to Becher’s Bay on Santa Rosa Island where we anchored for a night in high winds that prevented us from going ashore.

Santa Cruz’s Painted Cave- the largest sea cave in California and 4th largest in the world, extends 1227 feet long and is large enough to drive a boat into. We took our dinghy.

We then chose to anchor in Pelican Bay on Santa Cruz Island which turned out to be one of our favorite anchorages of the summer. It was well protected from wind and waves by large cliffs surrounding the anchorage. We spent several days relaxing, hiking, and swimming in this remarkable anchorage.

On July 24th we left the isolation and solitude of the Channel Islands for two nights in Ventura Harbor where we refueled and re-provisioned supplies prior to heading off on the next leg of our trip.
