Puerto Escondido to La Paz

November 19 – December 1st, 2023

We arrived in Puerto Escondido and immediately took advantage of all it has to offer. We got to boat chores including having the bottom cleaned, servicing our outboard engine, and catching up on long overdue laundry. We spent several weeks in Puerto Escondido on a mooring in the spring and were happy to be here again. They have outstanding facilities including good marine services, extremely friendly and professional staff, an excellent restaurant, the best showers in Mexico, and even a new pickleball court. We took the opportunity to rent a car and drive to Loreto with our friends on Tino Pai to enjoy a night off the boat at La Mision hotel.

Loreto is a great town with excellent restaurants, bars, a brewery and good stores to replenish our food stocks. We were busy but had a great time off the boat. At our last anchorage before Puerto Escondido, we had been several miles off of the town of Loreto but had heard engines and saw tons of dust near the town. Turns out the Baja 1000 off-road race passed through Loreto this year. It would have been cool to see up close.

After almost a week, we filled up our fuel tanks and headed south stopping Agua Verde, San Evaristo, and Isla San Francisco on our way to La Paz. Returning to these anchorages again reminded us of how amazing the wildlife and people are along the baja. We enjoyed some spectacular sunsets and the full moon.

Our next stop was the city of La Paz. This was our first time here on Tasi. After finally getting the anchor down in the hectic anchorage, we took advantage of the outstanding marine supply stores to complete some much needed boat projects. We also took a day to explore the town. Hurricane Norma came through La Paz in late October this year and did substantial damage to the city. There was widespread flooding and extensive damage to boats and marinas. Although the city has mostly recovered, there is still evidence of the extensive damage to the marine community. We walked along the malecon and admired the sculptures and excellent bike paths. We met up with the crew of S/V Dark Horse at Marina de La Paz. We know Brian and Angela from Silver Gate Yacht Club and it was fun to see them out cruising in Mexico.

Our time in La Paz was short but fun. We look forward to returning soon to explore the city some more.

What post would be complete without the obligatory mahi photo?
