Spring in the Sea of Cortez

April 8 – 26, 2025

When the north winds finally died down we took the time to dive the boat in order to clean the bottom and change the zincs. Once complete, we headed to the north side of Isla Carmen to the outstanding anchorage of V-Cove. We had a great time showing our friends on Jus’ Rockin’ one of our favorite anchorages complete with a full on beach day.

Next stop was Marina Puerto Escondido where we not only got to enjoy the best showers in Mexico, but met up with our friends on Nani Ola. We rented a car and spent the day in Loreto complete with Birria, Augie’s Bar, Zapata Cantina, and the Cowboy Bar. Somewhere along the way we found the biggest pothole I’ve ever hit and ended up buying the rental company a new tire. At least it wasn’t the whole wheel.

Soon enough we were making our way back south with our first stop in Agua Verde, where we enjoyed hiking, fish tacos, and once again got to hang out with the crew of Nani Ola, Jus’ Rockin’ and new friends on Cerce. Then we were off to Los Gatos where we enjoyed exploring the cool red rock formations. We were joined there by the crew of One World and Jus’ Rockin’. We initially snuck up into an isolated part of the anchorage but were rudely awakened early in the morning when the tide went out and Tasi was resting on the soft, sandy bottom. Oh well, it was bound to happen some time.

In 1940, John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts chartered the fishing boat Western Flyer in Monterey, California, for an expedition to explore the Sea of Cortez. The notes from which culminated in the book The Log from the Sea of Cortez. The Western Flyer later fell into extreme disrepair until it was recently restored in Port Townsend, Washington. It is now back exploring the Sea of Cortez and we came across it several times this spring.

Continuing our journey south with Jus’ Rockin’ and One World, we stopped in Caleta Nopolo on Baja and Ensenada el Cardonal on Isla Partida.

One World tacking upwind into Ensenada el Cardonal to anchor under sail. Well done.

Finally, we had to head into La Paz to get ready for our next great adventure. Shelly and I have decided to do the offshore passage from Mexico to Hawaii and then on to the Pacific Northwest. We got a slip at the bougie Marina Cortez where we spoiled ourselves for a week at the dock. We took care of boat projects, inspections, and shopping for provisions in preparation for roughly three weeks offshore. This included yet another trip up the mast with the help of the One World crew so I could inspect all the rigging up close. We had a close call with disaster when a neighboring boat lost control and collided with Tasi and several other boats at the dock. Fortunately we didn’t suffer any significant damage although a few choice words may have been exchanged. Finally we stocked up on fuel, enjoyed some good meals and treats, and checked ourselves and Tasi out of Mexico. We are currently heading south to round the tip of Baja and head west towards Hawaii in the next few days.

We plan to post frequent short updates on our tracking page during our offshore passages. Please click the globe icon to access our tracking page with real time position updates.
